The newly formed, Indian Australian Association of NSW Inc [INDAUS Inc] arrived in the community scene with a big bang on 15th August, 2012 when it celebrated Indian Independence Day in a colorful, glittering and solemn manner at Parravilla, Parramatta. Backing up their claim of “an Association with a difference”, they had a large gathering of 350+ people attending this celebration, which was by invitation only [No ticket sale] and was supported by prominent Indian businesses.

Backing up their claim of “an Association with a difference”, they had a large gathering of 350+ people attending this celebration, which was by invitation only [No ticket sale] and was supported by prominent Indian businesses.

The venue was colorfully decorated with Australian and
Indian flags. Several prominent dignitaries including Hon Victor Dominello [Minister
for Citizenship and Communities], Hon David Clarke [Parliamentary Secretary],
Hon Marie Ficarra [Parliamentary Secretary], Hon John Robertson [Leader of the
Opposition], Kevin Conolly [MP for Riverstone], Geoff Lee [MP for Parramatta],
Matt Kean [MP for Hornsby] and Hon Stepan Kerkyasharian [Community Relations Commission
chair and CEO] were present. Others who
attended included Mr Vasan Srinivasan [President, Federation of Indian
Associations in Victoria], Mr Yair Miller [President, NSW Jewish Board of
Deputies], Mr. Albert Vella [President NSW Federation of Community Languages Schools],
Tim Cruickshank [NSW Blues cricketer], several multicultural community leaders,
business leaders and media representatives.
The event started with an introduction by Joint Secretary, Mr Gaurav Nirwal in which he mentioned briefly about the significance of the Independence Day and the progress made by India since then. A few patriotic and symbolic songs were played for the backdrop, followed by a musical Video presentation on “Unity in diversity” in India.
The official proceedings commenced with the playing of the national anthems of Australia and India. INDAUS Inc President, Dr Yadu Singh, started by saying that “India is in our blood and will remain so until our last breath”. He further said “We love Australia dearly and are loyal Australians but India has a special place in our hearts” to a thunderous applause. He briefly mentioned about the growth of the Indian community in Australia which is almost 400,000 or 2% of the Australian population now. He reminded the audience that approx. 200,000 of the total Indians in Australia are younger people who have arrived in the last 10 years. In some Sydney electorates, it is over 10%, which makes it very significant in the political scene and “Singh” is the number one surname in Blacktown. He explained that this association is an “association with a difference” and that its motto is “service with integrity”. He proudly mentioned that the executive committee has people with committed community record and more importantly, is dominated by younger people, which is the focus of INDAUS Inc. He also said “His team is itching to work hard for the community and to make INDAUS Inc the Number one Indian community Organization”. He thanked all the dignitaries, sponsors, and the media organizations that covered this celebration.

Dr Singh introduced the executive committee and the
core members of the newly formed association.Brief speeches were delivered by the minister, leader
of the opposition, CRC chair and the FIAV president. The theme of their speeches was the rich
contribution by the Indian community in all areas, the multicultural nature of
Australia and the integration of various communities into the wider Australian
community.

Mr. Anagan Babu, Secretary of INDAUS Inc, proposed a vote of thanks in which he thanked and appreciated all those involved in making this celebration possible in a short time frame. He singled out INDAUS Inc President, Dr Yadu Singh, for his energy, enthusiasm, drive and networking which resulted in arranging sponsorships of the nature which INDAUS Inc managed and fruition of an event of this nature in a very short time.
Two sponsors need special mention. Maya da Dhaba sponsored a superb and tasty Indian dinner with excellent entrée dishes, for which INDAUS Inc is immensely grateful. By sponsoring the catering for the event, Ajay Raj, the owner of this award winning Restaurant, has shown his pride and love for being Indian.

A cricket bat and a tee shirt signed by the entire Blues cricket team sponsored by Cricket NSW were then put for auction. After a keen and lively bidding, Mahesh Raj of Go Kool and Neni Tewary of Value World Travel, were the winners of these memorabilia respectively.
Overall the Independence Day celebrations and the launching of the Indian Australian Association of NSW were splendidly successful and rewarding for the organizers and enjoyable for the participants. INDAUS Inc executive committee is very grateful to the Indian community at large and sponsors specifically, for their strong support and participation. INDAUS Inc team has an ambitious agenda to work on and is seeking support, encouragement and participation from the members of the community.
